Much of the work to decommission Royal Navy ships is undertaken using contracts that provide support services for all ships conducting Fleet activities at HM Naval Base, Portsmouth. Costs are not attributed to individual vessels.
Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) was responsible for the removal of classified equipment and known hazardous materials from the former HMS ARK ROYAL. This work cost £0.7 million. Similar work is being carried out on the former HMS ILLUSTRIOUS which has yet to be sold. Expenditure incurred to date is £0.5 million.
The Disposal Services Authority (DSA), part of DE&S, disposes of defence equipment that is surplus to requirement. DSA costs are not attributed to individual platforms and information on these ships is not held in the format requested.

The total cost of the purchase of parts from the former Aircraft Carrier, Ark Royal for use on the repair and refitting of HMS Illustrious, is approximately £18,500 excluding VAT. This was for an electrical switchboard.
Obtaining the switchboard from the former Ark Royal rather than using other procurement options resulted in savings of approximately £57,000 and meant the part could be replaced months before it otherwise would have been.
Since the retirement and sale of the former HMS Ark Royal in 2013, this is the only purchase of parts from this vessel by the Ministry of Defence.

There were no specific discussions with the Secretary of State for Defence, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), regarding the dismantling of the HMS
Ark Royal. However there is agreed Government policy set out in the Ship Recycling Strategy which provides the opportunity for UK based firms to compete fairly and openly. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) sold the former HMS Ark Royal following an open competition held in accordance with this strategy. Seventeen proposals, either to recycle or re-use the ship, were received including seven from UK firms. As a result of this competitive process Leyal was selected to recycle the ship at its shipyard in Turkey.

Seventeen proposals have been received to buy HMS Ark Royal. I am withholding the information about the details of individual proposals as disclosure would prejudice commercial interests. No decisions have been made about the future of the ship.
