To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many excess deaths there were at Hull Royal Infirmary in each of the last six months; and what the causes of those deaths were.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many excess deaths there were at Hull Royal Infirmary in each of the last six months; and what the causes of those deaths were.
Data on excess deaths are not available by NHS Trust. It is likely that a combination of factors has contributed, including high flu prevalence, the ongoing challenges of COVID-19 and health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. We are taking steps to help reduce excess deaths, including those which involve COVID-19, and those due to other factors.

While NHS England and NHS Improvement collect data on patient discharges and delayed discharges, centrally validated data is not currently held at individual hospital level.
The Department is working with NHS England and NHS Improvement, local government and social care providers to monitor and address the underlying causes of delayed discharges. This includes collating and reviewing data to identify and resolve local and regional issues which may delay a patient’s discharge from hospital.
I was very distressed to learn last week that a higher than average number of people in Hull are having foot amputations, partly because of diabetic foot ulcers and despite excellent work by the vascular department. The message from that department is that it is underfunded, under-resourced and in desperate need of an infrastructure upgrade to its theatre. Time is running out, so instead of asking the Secretary of State to meet me, will he just act very quickly to give it the funding it needs to stop unnecessary amputations happening in Hull?

We have the largest infrastructure investment programme in a generation and I am very happy to look at the specific request from Hull to ensure it gets the infrastructure it needs.

| Notes: 1. Data are not collected for individual hospitals. Data were collected by health authority only prior to 2001–02. Trust level data were collected from 2001–02 onwards. September 2005 represents the latest data. 2. A last minute cancellation is one that occurs on the day the patient was due to arrive, after they have arrived in hospital or on the day of their operation. For example, you are to be admitted to hospital on a Monday for an operation scheduled for the following day (Tuesday). If the hospital cancels your operation for non-clinical reasons on the Monday then this would count as a last minute cancellation. This includes patients who have not actually arrived in hospital and have been telephoned at home prior to their arrival. 3. An operation which is rescheduled to a time within 24 hours of the original scheduled operation should be recorded as a postponement and not as a cancellation. The quarterly monitoring cancelled operations (QMCO) collection does not record the number of postponements. 4. Some common non-clinical reasons for cancellations by the hospital include: ward beds unavailable; surgeon unavailable; emergency case needing theatre; theatre list over-ran; equipment failure; administrative error; anaesthetist unavailable; theatre staff unavailable; and critical care bed unavailable.
