We do not comment on commercial decisions.
The government recognises the important role Build to Rent plays in the housing sector, delivering high quality homes for those who rent, and supporting the delivery of 1.5m homes in this Parliament. We are supporting the sector with changes to the National Planning Policy Framework and with financial support through our £3.5 billion Private Rented Sector Guarantee Scheme, £2 billion Home Building Fund, and the new £16 billion National Housing Bank.

The Cabinet Office procures furniture, furnishings, and work-related items from a range of suppliers. It is sometimes the case that required items can be procured cheaper at great British brands such as John Lewis. This has been the practice under previous administrations. Value for money is always central to purchase decisions.
That this House recognises the bold leadership shown by John Lewis in becoming the first UK retailer to introduce six months’ equal parenthood paid leave and two weeks paid leave for any partner who experiences pregnancy loss; notes that progressive practices such as this are crucial to closing the gender pay gap and encouraging less gendered and more diverse opportunities for parents; considers this a vital step in rethinking the workplace which moves society closer to creating a kinder and fairer employment sector; and encourages other business and organisations to follow the example set by John Lewis and to consider implementing similar practices for the benefit of their own workforces.
