I am always pleased to hear of plans to commemorate those who have served their country, and I would warmly welcome a memorial to the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, who have played such a distinguished role in many theatres. However, my hon. Friend will be aware that it is the policy of successive Governments that the cost of erecting new memorials is not usually met from public funds, but from private donations or public subscription. Responsibility for the design, location, maintenance, protection, and any decision about what a memorial commemorates rests with the owner, or the organisation in which ownership is vested.

That this House calls on the Government to preserve the historic name of the Light Infantry and also recognises the Light Infantry's historic ties to Shropshire and Herefordshire which have ensured that the Light Infantry has remained one of the best recruited regiments in the army; and asks that the Government reconsiders its proposals to change the name of the Light Infantry to The Rifles.
