To protect the operational security of the Fleet, I am unable to provide further granularity.
In addition, the Royal Navy does not hold individual Service personnel at a readiness state but rather Force Elements or individual units. This information is withheld as its disclosure would, or would be likely to prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the Armed Forces.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what assessment he has made of the financial health of the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company and its potential effect on the MARS programme.
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) continues to progress the build of all four ships under the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability Tanker contract. The Ministry of Defence is aware of reports in the specialist press regarding financial losses reported in the shipbuilding industry, including DSME. We continue to closely monitor this situation with DSME, noting that this is primarily a matter for the company.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether the final performance cost and time envelope for the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability tankers has been agreed with the Ministry of Defence Approving Authority.
The performance, cost and time envelope for the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability Tankers was approved by the Ministry of Defence's Investment Approvals Committee (IAC) in October 2011. This approval was based on indicative information and allowed the competitive process to be completed.
The final performance cost and time envelope was confirmed by the IAC in December 2012.

The report articulates a risk of confusion regarding responsibilities and requirements by the contractor in delivery of the integrated logistics support (ILS) solution for the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability Tankers.
If this risk occurred, it may affect the successful delivery of the logistics support package. This risk having been identified, is, however, being actively managed by the Ministry of Defence in close co-operation with the contractor and ILS specialist companies.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what the cost was of the re-fit of RFA Fort Austin; and whether three replacement solid support ships will be in service in the early 2020s under the contract for the MARS vessels.

The final cost of refitting Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Austin is in the process of being assessed but is expected to be around £40 million.
The Fleet Solid Support element of the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability Programme is not covered by any contractual commitment at this time. The Ministry of Defence will decide its future plans once further capability investigation is complete later this decade.

The approved budget for the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) Tanker project, which includes both the contract cost for the design and build of the four ships by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and the further customisation package is £596 million.
The value of the contract for the design and build of the four ships is currently £458 million which represents an increase of £6 million since the award of the contract on 9 March 2012 was announced. This increase in contract value, which does not affect the overall project cost, is as a result of the addition of essential health and safety as well as environmental features and operability changes that will provide long-term efficiencies.
The remaining approved budget for the project covers additional activities required to bring the ships into service with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. These activities include a customisation package of work, to take place in the UK after the MARS tankers have been built, that will provide essential classified features required for deployment and capability assessment trials.

I understand that point. The point has been made that the complexity of warships can make it quite difficult for other countries' companies to make successful pitches. There might also, however, be a point to be made about the cheap end of the market—if we can use that expression in...
