To ask His Majesty's Government how the Royal Navy will undertake troop transport and search-and-rescue operations while the Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter is phased out of use.
The Royal Navy remains committed to maintaining the capabilities required to meet Defence tasks, including troop transport and search-and-rescue operations. Any transition from the Wildcat helicopter will be managed to ensure that operational requirements continue to be met through an appropriate mix of aviation capabilities and maritime assets.

The Royal Navy remains committed to maintaining the capabilities required to meet Defence tasks, including troop transport and search-and-rescue operations. Any transition from the Wildcat helicopter will be managed to ensure that operational requirements continue to be met through an appropriate mix of aviation capabilities and maritime assets.

The Department intends to replace the Wildcat maritime helicopters with autonomous capabilities in line with the Hybrid Navy concept and will fund this in the 2030s.
Any consequential adjustment to maritime Wildcat’s assumed out of service date, originally 2045, will be dependent on the progress of delivery of the autonomous systems that will replace them.

The Wildcat Maritime Force Operational Advantage Group was set up in 2023 to maximise the lethality of the Royal Navy’s Wildcat Maritime Attack Helicopter. Using rapid development principles, it focuses on development of capability, tactics, and procedures to enhance warfighting capability.

Defence is currently working with the Platform Design Organisation (Leonardo Helicopters Ltd) to develop a TDL delivery programme for Wildcat, as part of the formal Concept and Assessment Phase. Further delivery dates are subject to approvals, with the Full Business Case expected to be submitted later this year.

The Royal Navy, and Joint Helicopter Command, hold and maintain an appropriate amount of all their platforms to meet operational requirements. I am withholding further information on the number of platforms available for operational deployment for security reasons.
