To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what data his Department holds on confirmed cases of waterborne illness linked to exposure to (a) Salmonella and (b) Leptospira at UK bathing waters since 2020.
There have been no reported outbreaks of salmonella spp. associated with recreational water use in the time period requested since 2020.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) undertakes surveillance of Salmonella spp. infections. No information is available on the suspected cause of gastrointestinal infection for individual cases, unless salmonellosis cases are epidemiologically linked to an outbreak.
The UKHSA also undertakes routine surveillance for leptospirosis infections in humans, and publishes a quarterly report on the common animal-associated infections, with further information available at the following link:

The Government has been supporting Birmingham City Council (BCC) in its efforts to address the backlog of waste that had been building up on the city’s streets. MHCLG has worked with a number of key Government Departments to provide support to BCC including engagement with both DHSC and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). UKHSA has been monitoring any potential health impacts and BCC have undertaken regular public health assessments lead by BCC’s Director of Public Health.

The Council have reported that all on street waste and fly tipping waste has been cleared, waste estimated to be held at properties is now back to near normal levels. Around 100 to 120 Council waste collection vehicles are out daily collecting around 1,300 tonnes of waste. This is near normal levels of waste collection and normal household collection for all Birmingham residents has resumed.
BCC will continue to assess levels of rubbish and their potential impact on the local area, and the government continues to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

My Rt. Hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, is closely monitoring the situation in Birmingham.
Birmingham City Council is conducting a risk assessment on the potential public health impacts of uncollected waste. The assessment is being led by the Director of Public Health for Birmingham and encompasses a broad range of potential impacts, including risk of infectious diseases, including Weil’s disease.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is part of a multi-agency response Strategic Coordinating Group, led by Birmingham City Council, and has contributed to the risk assessment. UKHSA will continue to provide advice and support to Birmingham City Council as long as is necessary.

Leptospirosis cases in England show seasonality, with more cases reported in summer and autumn. Many cases diagnosed in England report exposure to potentially contaminated water or direct contact with rodents as the probable source of infection. Reported infections are most common in adult men, likely due to occupational and recreational exposures. However, infection can occur in anyone directly exposed to urine or urine-contaminated environments, regardless of age or sex.

A table showing a count of finished episode admissions in each year from 2012/13 to 2020/21 where any primary or secondary diagnosis of leptospirosis was recorded by hospital provider in England is attached. In order to protect patient confidentiality '*' appears in the table for all sub-national breakdowns, where it is possible to calculate a value between 1 and 7 from the data presented. All other sub-national data has been rounded to the nearest 5.

The European Medicine’s Agency publishes the Veterinary Pharmacovigilance Public Bulletin. This document provides an update on pharmacovigilance issues relating to products authorised at an EU level. The March 2018 edition reports that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) has requested the marketing authorisation holder for Nobivac L4 Suspension for Injection for Dogs to provide a report focusing on all adverse events involving death or euthanasia. This report is still being assessed. At the current time, the CVMP considers that the benefits of use of this vaccine in preventing serious infection continue to outweigh the risks.

The UK’s Veterinary Medicines Directorate works closely with the EMA and other similar agencies throughout Europe to monitor the safety and efficacy of all veterinary medicines, including leptospirosis vaccines. These vaccines have been reviewed and the benefits of use of these vaccines in preventing serious infection continue to outweigh the risks.
