While Pakistan's judicial processes are a domestic matter, we are clear that the Pakistani authorities need to respect fundamental freedoms, including the right to a fair trial, due process, humane detention and access to appropriate medical treatment. This applies to Imran Khan as it does to all Pakistan's citizens. We have raised these principles privately with the Government of Pakistan at suitable opportunities and will continue to do so. The Minister for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan met Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dar on 27 August to discuss a wide range of issues, including matters relating to Imran Khan.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether her Department holds information on a standard letter template used by Pakistani men to falsely claim they are gay during the asylum process.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether her Department holds information on a standard letter template used by Pakistani men to falsely claim they are gay during the asylum process.
The Home Office is committed to ensuring that the asylum system is not open to abuse. It is the responsibility of everyone claiming asylum in the UK to co-operate with the Home Office and tell the truth. It is a crime to make an asylum application that involves trying to deceive the Home Office. If anyone does this and is found guilty of it in a court, they may be given a custodial sentence, after which they may be deported.
All asylum and human rights claims, including those raised by Pakistan nationals on grounds of sexuality are carefully considered on their individual merits in accordance with our international obligations. Our guidance for considering asylum claims is available on GOV.UK at: Assessing credibility and refugee status: caseworker guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
The weight to be placed on evidence of support from any particular individual or organisation is something for an asylum decision maker to judge on a case-by-case basis, in line with the Immigration Rules and Home Office policy.
A decision maker will not accept that someone is gay simply because they claim to be so. Such declarations constitute the starting point in the consideration process and are subject to probing at interview and a proper assessment of the facts and circumstances.

We recognise the concern caused by continuing communications restrictions, particularly for diaspora communities with family in the region. The safety of British nationals remains our top priority, and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice continues to advise against all but essential travel to the region.
I raised our concerns directly with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, on 27 August, including the reported loss of life, arrests and communications restrictions, and their impact on British nationals. The British High Commissioner to Pakistan has also raised our concerns with senior Pakistani counterparts. We continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage all sides to show restraint, uphold human rights and resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue.

The UK remains committed to promoting freedom of religion or belief for all, including through our engagement with the Government of Pakistan. In my meeting with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dar on 27 August, I raised a number of human rights issues. We regularly raise the rights of religious minorities with Pakistani counterparts, while UK-funded programmes promote interfaith dialogue and support marginalised communities. We will continue to urge Pakistan to protect the rights and safety of all religious communities, including Christians, in line with its international obligations.
