To ask His Majesty's Government whether they have had discussions with Ofcom regarding the editing of President Trump's speech in the Panorama programme Trump: A Second Chance?.
Senior Officials have regular contact with Ofcom leadership, on a variety of matters - the independence of the regulator is nevertheless vital and discussions always respect this distinction. Maintaining the BBC’s editorial standards is also very important, as is the need for the BBC to be accountable.
We support a strong independent BBC. In an age of disinformation, the argument for a robust impartial British news service is stronger than ever. It is important that trust is maintained and that errors are corrected quickly. Tim Davie and Deborah Turness have subsequently both taken responsibility for the mistakes they admit the BBC has made.
As the BBC is independent of Government, it is for Ofcom, as the independent regulator of the BBC, to ensure that the BBC fulfils its obligations to audiences as outlined in the Charter and the Broadcasting Code.

I refer the Hon. Member to the answer provided on 17 November to Question 89121, which sets out the Government's position on this matter.

The Secretary of State has been speaking regularly to the Chair of the Board in relation to the points raised in a letter written by Michael Prescott, a former independent adviser to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee (EGSC). Dr Samir Shah, Chair of the BBC, has rightly apologised for editorial failings, and has committed to a number of steps including undertaking a review of each item set out in Michael Prescott’s letter and reviewing how the EGSC works and propose changes.
The public expects and deserves the highest editorial standards from the BBC. The Secretary of State has been consistently clear that where these standards are not met, firm and transparent action must follow. The Government therefore welcomes the steps set out by the Chair, and the Secretary of State will continue to seek updates on their progress.
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, if she will hold discussions with the Director General of the BBC on allegations of mis-editing of President Trump by Panorama.
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, if she will hold discussions with the Director General of the BBC on allegations of mis-editing of President Trump by Panorama.
Senior officials in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have received a copy of the dossier containing these allegations and have been assured by the BBC that they are examining the issues raised in the report. The Culture Secretary is being kept updated on these developments.
Because the BBC is independent of government, it is for the Corporation to respond to questions about their editorial decisions. It is crucial the BBC upholds the highest standards of reporting and impartiality, so they are trusted as the national broadcaster and the Government therefore expects the BBC to consider feedback they receive seriously and carefully.

The Government is committed to tackling the supply of illegal drugs, including online, and the harms associated with their misuse.
Our County Lines Programme is targeting exploitative drug-dealing gangs while breaking the organised crime groups behind this trade. Between July 2024 and March 2025, law enforcement activity delivered through the Programme has resulted in more than 1,200 drug dealing lines closed and 2,000 arrests. In parallel, law enforcement agencies continue to target those facilitating the online sale of drugs. The National Crime Agency is working with partners in the UK and internationally to target offenders operating on open and dark-net markets, and to take down UK-based sites committing offences.
In addition, the Government has strengthened the regulatory framework to address online harms. The unlawful sale of controlled drugs online is a priority offence under the illegal content duties in the Online Safety Act 2023 and internet companies are legally required to implement measures to protect their users and to remove illegal content from their platforms, including that related to the sale of illegal drugs. Ofcom, as the independent regulator, is monitoring compliance with the regime.
Finally, the Minister for Policing and Crime Prevention wrote to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) in January 2025 to request an updated assessment about ketamine, including advice on reducing harms. The ACMD is also reviewing internet-facilitated drugs markets. The Government will consider their advice carefully once received.

That this House condemns the decision of the BBC's Board of Governors to move BBC1's Nine O'clock News to 10 pm one year ahead of schedule and without public consultation; believes that this decision and the decision to move Panorama to a late Sunday evening slot represent a further marginalisation of news and current affairs on BBC1; and calls on the BBC's Board of Governors to reinstate the Nine O'clock News on BBC1 with immediate effect.

Supplementary business question on EDM 1015 on Panorama programme on BSE.
That this House notes the failure of the BBC Television Panorama programme of Monday 17th June to draw a curious connection to the attention of their viewers; namely, that in an attempt to portray incompetence by the Conservative government, they focused on a farm near Ashford, Kent, alleging at the least irresponsible management leading to the spread of BSE, and hinting at a possible connection with three CJD cases in East Kent; and notes that they displayed the proprietors of the farm to be R. Sternberg of Plurenden Farm, but significantly failed to mention that this referred to the late Rudy Sternberg, a personal friend of the late Harold Wilson, who was created a Life Peer by the then Labour Prime Minister in the style and title of Baron Plurenden, ostensibly for services to British agriculture.
