That this House congratulates Paul Coleman on returning to Westminster after a 3,000 mile walk around Britain, which began at Westminster on 1st May 1998; acknowledges the interest in this walk from people from all walks of life who gave support to reforestation issues nationally and internationally, including the reforestation of Sarajevo after three years of intense war; looks forward to continuing debate on the contribution tree planting makes to society and the environment; and further looks forward to Paul Coleman and Tony Hoole taking trees donated by people in the United Kingdom to plant in Sarajevo.

That this House notes that having already walked from Ontario to Rio de Janeiro to attend the Earth Summit I meeting, and from San Francisco to Sarajevo to promote peace-keeping and environmental restoration efforts, Paul Colman is, on 1st May, embarking on a 2005 mile walk throughBritain, starting from Westminster and continuing to Northern Scotland via rural communities, towns and cities en route, including Oxford, Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Edinburgh, John O'Groats and back to Lands End via Glasgow, Liverpool, Cardiff, Bristol, and then from Lands End via Plymouth and Reading back to London; urges communities, councils, schools and people everywhere along the way to welcome him and assist and encourage local contributions to local Agenda 21 campaigns and the planting of trees on behalf of the 1600 children killed during the siege of Sarajevo and the restoration efforts underway in that city; and urges those along the route to follow his progress on www.earthwalker.com.

That this House salutes the citizens of Sarajevo, as they mark 1,000 days of seige, for the courage and dignity with which they have withstood devastations and privations no civilised community should be called upon to bear; expresses its profound regret that none of the institutions of the international community have been able effectively to deter the aggression of those Bosnian Serbs who accept the leadership of Radovan Karadic; believes it is essential that such aggression should not be rewarded and that what the Mayor of Sarajevo has recently referred to as `the exceptional and unique charms of multiculturalism', of which the city has been such a shining example, are not allowed to perish; and urges Her Majesty's Government to give whatever support it can to ensure that Sarajevo survives as an open and united city and capital of an independent nation.

That this House welcomes the decision of European Dialogue and the Sarajevo Cosmopolitan Recovery Association to organise a literary meeting in London on 23rd January devoted to the 1,000th day of the siege of Sarajevo; notes that this event, which is entitled Sarajevo 1000-Scheherazade 2001, will bring together authors and others from Bosnia-Herzegovina; believes that such events can help to ensure that the tragic suffering of the people of Sarajevo, and of the whole of the former Yugoslavia, is not forgotten by the Government or public opinion; and further believes that such events highlight continuing efforts to rebuild a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural future for Serbs, Muslims and Croats.
