Northern Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom, and its consumers should be able to enjoy products they have bought from Great Britain. Our biosecurity standards remain as high as they always have done, and these goods remain entirely safe for NI consumers to enjoy. The Government has seen no evidence of chilled meats moved from Great Britain finding their way onto the EU market.
We welcome the fact that we have been able to agree an extension of the grace period on chilled meats moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. This means that Northern Ireland consumers will be able to continue to buy chilled meat products from Great Britain, and allows for further discussions to continue on a permanent solution without requiring the UK to dynamically align with EU rules.
To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are aware of any criminal operations to disguise the origin of sausages intended for sale in Northern Ireland in order to sell them in the Republic of Ireland.

The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) expert opinion on mechanically separated meat is expected by 31 March 2013. The Government have made it clear to the Commission that we expect discussions on the definition of mechanically separated meat to be re-opened at working group level as soon as possible once EFSA's opinion has been published.
I have not received any recent representations on the import of mechanically separated meat destined for sausage meat.

The Lincolnshire Sausage Association (LSA) submitted an appeal against the decision to reject the application to protect the name ‘Lincolnshire Sausage’ as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) on 14 June 2012. We are now giving careful consideration to the grounds of that appeal. Any reconsideration of our decision will depend on new evidence and information being provided by the LSA in its appeal.
We will write to the LSA to inform it of the outcome of our consideration of the appeal.

The Government wants to encourage more applications under the EU's Protected Food Name scheme. However, in order to be registered under the scheme applications must meet the required criteria for registration.
Our recent decision to reject the application from the Lincolnshire Sausage Association (LSA) to protect the name, ‘Lincolnshire Sausage’ under the EU Protected Food Name scheme was made after careful consideration of all the evidence provided by the applicants and the objecting parties. The reasons for that decision were set out in some detail in the letter we sent to the LSA on 16 May. A copy of that letter can be found at the following link:
http://archive.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/food/industry/regional/foodname/products/documents/linconshire-sausage-letter20120516.pdf
That letter also makes provision for an appeal to be made to the decision. Any reconsideration of our decision would be dependent on new arguments and information being put forward. At the request of the LSA, we have agreed to extend the deadline for the submission of appeals from 31 May 2012 to 15 June 2012.
We remain open to looking at other options which would allow producers in Lincolnshire to highlight the traditional and local nature of their sausages.
