To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking to ensure a regular supply of tomatoes in the UK.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps she is taking to ensure a regular supply of tomatoes in the UK.
The UK has a highly resilient food supply chain that is well equipped to deal with any potential disruption. Our high degree of food security is built on supply from diverse sources including strong domestic production and imports through stable trade routes.
Defra works with industry and across Government to monitor risks that may arise. This includes extensive, regular and ongoing engagement in preparedness for, and response to, issues with the potential to cause disruption to food supply chains. The UK Agriculture Market Monitoring Group monitors UK agricultural markets including price, supply, inputs, trade, and recent developments.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if she will make an estimate of the number of tomatoes that were imported in February (a) 2022 and (b) 2023.
Provisional HMRC Overseas Trade Data shows the UK imported 32,300 tonnes of fresh tomatoes in February 2022. Data for February 2023 is not yet available.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps he is taking to prevent tomato brown rugose fruit virus spreading to the UK.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps he is taking to prevent tomato brown rugose fruit virus spreading to the UK.
Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is a virus which infects tomato and pepper crops. It was first described infecting tomato crops in Israel in 2014, but subsequently it has spread to other tomato growing regions around the world. ToBRFV is readily spread from plants to plants by handling of plants and tools used in crop management and is also seed transmissible. The virus has also been shown to be transmitted by bumblebees during pollination. The ToBRFV virus is harmless to humans and animals but can cause serious damage to crops.
In November 2019 EU emergency legislation was introduced to prevent the spread of ToBRFV, which applies in the UK during the transition period. The UK was instrumental in ensuring that the introduction of this legislation was prioritised and based on the most up to date technical evidence. This legislation requires that plants, including seed, of tomatoes and peppers being imported or moved meets prescribed requirements to confirm they are free from the virus.
In the UK there has been an extensive programme of testing of tomato and pepper seed which had been moved into the UK prior to the introduction of the EU legislation. Where infected stocks have been identified these have been destroyed. Surveillance of growing crops will be carried out by the Animal and Plant Health Agency throughout this growing season and plans to manage outbreaks are in place should infected crops be identified.
Defra and Fera Science Ltd are working closely with the industry to raise awareness of ToBRFV and to encourage good practice in the industry to minimise the risk. Industry initiatives are supporting these official activities, including research funded by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the research by Professor Graham Seymour into controlling the softening of the tomato fruit.

We welcome Professor Graham Seymour’s research project and my officials will be writing to him shortly to invite him to present his results to them.

The export of the seeds was subject to the requirements at Article 12.1 and 12.3 of EU Regulation No.1946/2003 on the transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The seeds were consigned to the importer on that basis, in appropriately sealed packaging. The tomato juice is being sterilised before export to the UK and will not contain any seeds. The import is therefore not subject to any GMO-related requirements. The juice will be stored in an appropriate manner at the John Innes Centre.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the Ti-plasmid transgene cassette of genetically modified purple tomatoes contains a kanamycin resistance gene; and whether there are any antibiotic resistance genes remaining in the plants or fruit to be used for human trials.[HL5005]
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the Ti-plasmid transgene cassette of genetically modified purple tomatoes contains a kanamycin resistance gene; and whether there are any antibiotic resistance genes remaining in the plants or fruit to be used for human trials.[HL5005]
No application has been made for the authorisation of genetically modified purple tomatoes or for their cultivation. The Government therefore does not hold any information on the composition or properties of these plants, including the possible presence of antibiotic resistance genes.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the genetically modified purple tomato juice to be used in a clinical trial on United Kingdom heart patients has been tested for toxicity in accordance with European Union regulations, in addition to the small-scale test on mice performed in Italy.[HL5004]

No application has been made for the authorisation of genetically modified purple tomatoes or for their cultivation. The Government therefore does not hold any information on the composition or properties of these plants or on any toxicity tests that have been carried out on the juice from such tomatoes.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether mRNA (transcriptome) analysis has been used to assess the possibility that genes other than the target genes for anthocyanin synthesis in genetically modified purple tomatoes would have been turned on by the two transcription factors; and, if so, what were the results.[HL5006]

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the genetically modified purple tomato pulp to be used experimentally on United Kingdom heart patients will be imported from Canada as a food or a medicinal product.[HL5008]
The Government is not aware of any plans to conduct research on United Kingdom heart patients using genetically modified tomatoes.
If such products were to be marketed in the UK, they would first need to be evaluated and authorised under European Union Regulation 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. The definition of "medicinal product" does not apply to nutritionally-enhanced foods such as this genetically modified tomato, which has been developed to produce a high level of anthocyanins.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government who will be funding the trial of genetically modified purple tomato pulp on United Kingdom heart patients; in what establishment it will take place; and who are the principal investigators.[HL5009]
