Wiltshire council has assessed that the combination of the decision to stop the A303 tunnel at Stonehenge—despite £250 million already being committed to that, and spent—confirmation that the UK Health Security Agency will move to Harlow from Porton; the reduction to the rural grant; and Wiltshire having one of the...

The Environment Agency is aware of persistent odour reports in Calne and continues to treat the issue as a priority. Officers from the Environment Agency’s Wessex Area team have been deployed daily since last Thursday to investigate the source and assess any environmental impacts. They are conducting odour assessments at the times residents report the smell to be strongest, mainly late at night and early morning. These assessments are helping to establish the odour’s intensity and origin and will inform any necessary regulatory action.
Defra engages closely with the Environment Agency and other agencies to review resources and enforcement powers.
That this House recognises that chalk streams are among the rarest freshwater habitats on Earth, with around 200 known globally, the majority of which are found in England; notes the presence of these unique ecosystems in Wiltshire, including the River Marden in Calne; further notes that chalk streams support exceptional biodiversity; acknowledges the ecological and environmental importance of the River Marden and other chalk streams in Wiltshire to local communities and wildlife; expresses concern at the pressures these rivers face from pollution, over-abstraction and development; welcomes efforts to secure stronger protection for chalk streams, including proposals to nominate England’s chalk streams as a serial UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site; and calls on the Government to begin the formal process of seeking UNESCO designation, strengthen planning protections for chalk streams including the River Marden, and ensure that fines levied on water companies for pollution are reinvested directly into restoring and protecting these irreplaceable rivers for future generations.

I thank the hon. Member for those points; he made them well, and I take them on. We should all think of what happened in Glasgow at the weekend.
Family members of firefighters from Wiltshire are in the Gallery, and I thank them for coming. I know of firefighters from Dorset...

I am grateful to my constituency neighbour for allowing me to intervene. He will know that my right hon. Friend the Member for Salisbury (John Glen), who is concerned about Wilton, has written to the Minister to request a meeting. I did the same at Prime Minister’s questions yesterday. I...

Does the hon. Gentleman agree that the issue is easy to resolve? The conundrum we are in is based on the Treasury assessment that he described, which was over-optimistic through nobody’s particular fault, but we can remedy it simply by allowing some flexibility in the precept. That would deal with...

I thank the right hon. Member for his comments; in fact, I will go into some details on that now. Members from all parties will recognise that rural fire services face different cost pressures compared with urban ones, and rurality is not adequately addressed in the current or previous funding...

I agree with everything the hon. Gentleman has to say. However, does he agree that the only practical way of getting Dorset and Wiltshire fire and rescue service the funds it needs to prevent the closure of the eight stations, including at Mere in my constituency, is to allow for...

I fully accept that an increase in the precept would be one option available to the Government, but I would also like to challenge the Government on the underlying assumptions in Treasury funding models, not least with the forecast population growth and the lack of rurality in many of the...

I welcome the multi-year settlement, and so does the fire and rescue service. However, does the Minister accept that one problem is that the assumptions on which Government support is based—the growth of council tax—cannot be tweaked up or down, because we are looking at a longer settlement period than...
