That this House congratulates parkrun on the occasion of the one millionth parkrun event taking place globally; recognises the extraordinary impact that parkrun has had since its founding in 2004, growing from a small community run in Bushy Park to a worldwide movement spanning multiple countries; notes that the first ever parkrun saw 18 people take part, and this has grown to 12 million registrations and more than 2,800 events in 23 countries; acknowledges the contribution of the millions of participants, volunteers, organisers, and supporters who have made parkrun a cornerstone of community life; commends parkrun’s commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and the promotion of physical and mental wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities; celebrates the vital role that volunteers play in sustaining weekly events and building strong local communities; highlights the importance of free, regular, outdoor exercise in improving public health outcomes; and calls on the Government to continue supporting initiatives like parkrun that encourage grassroots sport, active lifestyles, and community engagement across the United Kingdom.

That this House warmly congratulates the organisers, volunteers, and participants of the Oriam Parkrun on reaching its 250th event on the same weekend that the 1 millionth parkrun was held; recognises that this significant milestone reflects a strong collaborative partnership between Oriam, Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre, Heriot-Watt University, the local community, and Parkrun; acknowledges the vital role Oriam Parkrun plays in promoting physical and mental wellbeing through its free, inclusive, and community-led weekly 5k events, staying true to the ethos Free, Forever, For Everyone; notes with appreciation that over 43,172 course completions have been amassed by more than 11,889 runners, joggers and walkers, made possible by the dedication of 843 volunteers; commends the Oriam Parkrun team for creating a welcoming and supportive environment for participants and volunteers of all ages and abilities; thanks the Heriot-Watt University Estates team for their continued efforts in maintaining the course; extends gratitude to the Student Union for providing post-event refreshments; celebrates the positive and far-reaching impact the event has had on the local community in Edinburgh and beyond; and wishes Oriam Parkrun continued success and growth in the years to come.

The Government is committed to ensuring that everyone should have access to and benefit from quality sport and physical activity opportunities. Local initiatives such as parkrun align with our commitment to place based working, enabling communities to co-create local solutions that break down the barriers to getting active.
That this House celebrates the 10th anniversary of Harrogate Junior Parkrun, held at Valley Gardens, Harrogate; celebrates the organisers, volunteers and participants who have made the 438 events a success; thanks the 959 volunteers who have given their time on Sunday mornings for the last decade to make the event possible; warmly congratulates the 5,266 finishers who have accumulated 42,740 total finishes; recognises the contribution of Junior Parkrun to children and families in Harrogate and Knaresborough; notes that this free, weekly, two kilometre event offers children aged 4 to 14 the opportunity to improve their physical fitness, wellbeing and community spirit; and calls on the Government to continue to support children’s grassroots physical activity initiatives.

It was fantastic to see children excited about exercise, and to be there to celebrate Rose and Luna getting their half-marathon wristbands. We need a team effort to succeed in getting millions more moving and there’s lots for us to learn from Parkrun’s experience.

Tackling disparities in levels of participation in sport and physical activity is central to Sport England’s ten-year ‘Uniting the Movement’ strategy and the Government’s ‘Get Active’ strategy, through which we have set a target of having 1.25 million more active women by 2030.
Sport England’s strategy is clear that all funding partners must work towards delivering its strategic priorities. Sport England previously awarded Parkrun £3 million between December 2018 and December 2021. The strategic purpose of this award was to start 200 new runs, with specific participation targets for women and people from lower socio-economic groups.
In 2022 Parkrun became a Sport England system partner receiving £5 million of public investment with a view to making sport and physical activity more accessible to all over the next five years. Sport England monitors this investment, ensuring that Parkrun delivers against the range of priorities in Sport England’s strategy. The Department works closely with Sport England to monitor the delivery of this strategy, including key ambitions to increase participation of women and girls.
I am a keen parkrunner in Walsall, but I am also part of the core team of volunteers that recently brought parkrun to Tamworth. In the 20th anniversary year of parkrun, will the Prime Minister join me in encouraging other towns that do not yet have a parkrun to get one?

Sports and physical activity are incredibly important for our physical and mental health and all generations and communities should be able to enjoy the health, wellbeing, social and other benefits of being active. This includes ParkRun which the government supported the safe return of between March and June 2021.
We knew the coming months would be challenging, which is why the government set out our Autumn and Winter plan earlier this year. However, the data does not currently show Plan B is necessary. Plan B does not include proposals to prevent physical activity.
Vaccines will continue to be our first line of defence and our focus remains on delivering boosters, vaccinating 12-15 year olds, mass testing to identify and isolate positive cases, and developing new treatments through our Antiviral Taskforce. The Government will continue to support and work with local authorities and local areas directly to reduce the spread and minimise the impact of COVID-19.

Organised outdoor sport, such as Parkrun, is exempt from legal gathering limits and can take place with any number of participants, as long as undertaken in line with published COVID-secure guidance. As such, Parkrun has been able to take place since 29 March as part of Step 1 of the government’s response to the Covid-19 Roadmap.
We are aware of issues at local levels around this, which is why I met with ParkRun on the 21 March to discuss the issues regarding their return. As the Secretary of State announced on 20th May, DCMS will be writing jointly with MHCLG to all Local Authorities to ensure these important events take place. I am committed to supporting them to return as soon as possible.

I met with ParkRun on 21 April to discuss their concerns regarding their return and my officials have engaged extensively on this issue over the past year . In addition, I have also issued a letter of support to ParkRun which they have sent on to landowners, clearly acknowledging that these events can take place. I have also raised my support in the House and through social media.
I am committed to supporting them to return as soon as possible. and I appeal to local authorities and landowners to work constructively with park run organisers on the safe return of park runs.
