Smoke Hoods

That this House notes that current smoke hood technology can protect air passengers from toxic fumes for at least 20 minutes in the event of aviation fire and that certification to the Civil Aviation Authority's standard is being sought for three products; further notes research from Linacre College, Oxford and the United States Federal Aviation Administration confirming that the donning and wearing of smoke hoods does not impede emergency evacuations but makes them more orderly; is surprised by the Civil Aviation Authority's continuing adherence to the findings of its Smoke Hoods: Net Safety Benefit Analysis which has been criticised as being deeply flawed by specialists worldwide; regrets British Airways' announcement that they no longer intend to pursue the need to provide such safety equipment and is concerned that this may have contributed to manufacturers withdrawing from the market; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Transport to express to the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority the widespread concern that air passengers travelling in the foreseeable future will not be afforded reasonable, effective and available protection from toxic fumes in the event of an in-flight or ground fire.
