H.M. CUSTOMS AND EXCISE

That this House congratulates officers of Her Majesty's Customs and Excise on their excellent work in the front line, tackling the smuggling of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, pornography and arms; notes that 300 officers out of 2,300 lost their jobs in the last financial year; asks the Government to take note of the increased dangers from such smuggling should Her Majesty's Treasury implement the second stage of reorganisation, reducing the number of front line officers by a further 300; and calls on the Government to reconsider the policy in view of the dangers to the community caused by illegal importation of drugs and the resultant cost to the Exchequer in terms of social security benefits and costs to the National Health Service.
