Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Colin Pickthall (Labour), on Tuesday, 1 February 2000, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 53 members in total.
ASDA AND LANCASHIRE FARMERS
That this House deplores the decision of ASDA effectively to dump the Lancashire area as a supplier of vegetables, removing at a stroke 50 to 70 per cent. of many Lancashire farmers' revenue; equally deplores the nature of the decision, made without warning or discussion with the farmers; and expresses its deep concern that this episode might well presage a more brutal and exploitative approach towards British farmers and growers introduced into the United Kingdom from the USA by Walmart.
