NHS EYE TESTS FOR ALL

That this House notes that the re-introduction of the NHS eye test for all would save the sight of hundreds of people each year as more eye diseases are detected earlier; notes that eye tests are crucial in detecting treatable diseases such as glaucoma which have no symptoms in the early stages; recognises that eye examinations can also detect a number of underlying health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or brain tumours; further notes that individuals are advised to have their eyes tested every two years but many are discouraged from doing so because of the cost; commends the Lib Dem-Labour administration in Wales for extending free eye examinations to those who are most vulnerable to eye disease; welcomes the report by the RNIB, Open Your Eyes; believes that investing in eye disease detection and treatment will prove cost-effective in the long run; and calls on the Government to provide adequate funding and clear standards to ensure quality eye tests for all.
