COMPETITIVE MULTI-AIRLINE INDUSTRY IN THE U.K.

That this House congratulates the Secretary of State for Transport both on his confirmation of the decision by the Civil Aviation Authority to allocate more flights to Tokyo by Virgin Atlantic Airways and on the successful completion of talks with the American Government over transatlantic routes which will benefit British airlines by some ??200 million; believes that these decisions are in the best interest of the British travelling public who will benefit from a greater choice of British airlines, lower fares, and a higher quality service; notes that Virgin Airways has already cut its fares by 15 per cent.; expects British Airways to follow suit; and urges the Secretary of State to continue to pursue policies which bring about a truly competitive multi-airline industry in the United Kingdom.
