WORLD BANK FOREST POLICY

That this House welcomes the recommendations of the Environment Select Committee Report, Climatological and Environmental Effects of Rainforest Destruction; believes the World Bank's new forest policy must avoid unsustainable exploitation by clear, comprehensive guidelines, increase indigenous people's participation over projects, appreciate all forest benefits not just timber production, and provide increased access to information about World Bank operations; and urges Her Majesty's Government to implement immediately the recommendation that the responsibility for the United Kingdom's membership of the International Tropical Timber Organisation be transferred from the Department of Trade and Industry to the Overseas Development Administration.
