RECESSION IN YORKSHIRE AND HUMBERSIDE

That this House condemns the Government's disastrous management of the economy; calls for urgent Government action to deal with the deepening and damaging recession; notes that since 1979, 225,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in Yorkshire and Humberside, in Calderdale job losses since the beginning of 1990 now total 2,746, an average of 211 a month and in Halifax last week three engineering firms announced the loss of 264 jobs; deplores the decade of neglect of the manufacturing base and the Government's disgraceful decision not to give grant aid to help regenerate Sowerby Bridge; further notes the Government cut of ??2.1 million from manufacturing investment in Yorkshire and Humberside; and calls upon the Government to implement an emergency programme immediately to save what is left of the manufacturing base by substantially cutting interest rates, developing a properly funded regional policy and investing in training and technology.
