PARLIAMENTARY HOURS

That this House notes the encouraging tone of the Prime Minister's reported remarks in the Mail on Sunday on 2nd December, relating to the introduction of more sensible hours and conditions for the House of Commons; and calls upon the Lord President of the Council to bring forward, after due consultation, proposals to effect such a change.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received 6 amendments.

161A3A1
at end add 'but that honourable Members should catch up with the battles of present day trades unionists to end employers' outdated restrictions and impositions like clocking on and clocking off, unsocial hours, poor working conditions and inadequate facilities; and calls for the abolition of clocking on and off throughout British industry and society.'.
161A5
leave out from 'notes' to end and add 'that the current pattern of sittings of the House has evolved progressively over the centuries to meet the many different demands upon the time of Right honourable and honourable Members; that the commencement of business at 2.30 pm allows Members to deal in the mornings with constituency correspondence, to participate in the valuable work of Select and Standing Committees, and to escort visitors to the Palace along the line of route; further welcomes the access to parliamentary proceedings provided by those sessions of debate in the Chamber and in Committee which take place in the evening; believes that any major change in the current arrangements would deny public access to the work of the House and be inconvenient for Members; and concludes that what is needed is reduction in the volume of legislation brought before the House.'.
161A1
after 'consultation', insert 'with Members from Northern Britain.'.
161A2
after 'commons' insert 'and the timing of the Summer recess'.
161A3
at end add 'and to require that honourable Members sign-in and sign-out like workers on similar hours; and believes that each honourable Member's salary should reflect the hours recorded.'.
161A4
after 'conditions', insert 'and to introduce electronic voting from the Chamber,'.
