Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Jim Lester (Conservative), on Wednesday, 26 May 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 139 members in total.
G7 SUMMIT, AID AND AFRICAN RECOVERY
That this House is deeply concerned that on current trends poverty in Africa is set to increase to 300 million people, half the region's population, by the year 2000; recognises the new opportunities for recovery in some African countries resulting from peace initiatives and the economic and political reforms that have taken place; fears these reforms will be undermined by the failure of the international community to address adequately the problems of massive external debt, declining terms of trade and stagnating aid receipts; welcomes the voluntary aid agencies' call for an increase in the United Kingdom's official aid budget, in particular the need for an additional ??100 million specifically for Africa; and calls on the Government to take the initiative on debt at the July G7 summit to seek the full implementation of the Trinidad Terms as a first step towards supporting African recovery.
