Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alice Mahon (Labour), on Monday, 2 November 1992, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 97 members in total.
UNDER-FUNDING ON BOOKS AND JOURNALS
That this House condemns the 32 per cent decline on books and journals in university library spending over the last 10 years; notes that university libraries spend an average of just a book and half a year per student; further notes that the situation for former polytechnic libraries is worse; agrees that the state of a university or polytechnic library is a clear indicator of the standards offered by the institution as a whole and the decline in provision must be of real concern to all; and urges that universities and polytechnic academic libraries be given sufficient further funding to enable students to learn and staff to teach.
