Overseas Students

Question: If she will make a statement on the number of overseas students attending university in England.

Answer: The latest figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show that there were 231,400 students from overseas in English higher education institutions—an increase of nearly 40 per cent. compared with eight years ago. The Department has taken steps to encourage higher education institutions to attract more international students through the Prime Minister's initiative. We recognised in the Department's international strategy the importance of the initiative and emphasised our commitment to continue to expand the numbers of international students.
