Courts Martial

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence pursuant to the oral answer of 7 November 2005, Official Report, columns 21–30, on courts martial, what the cost was of (a) the investigation and (b) the court martial proceedings in relation to the serving or former members of the Parachute Regiment accused of murdering an Iraqi citizen.

Answer: [holding answer 10 November 2005]: The costs for the investigation in relation to the serving and former members of the Parachute Regiment accused of murdering an Iraqi citizen are not available as a separate figure. General costs relating to the running of courts martial such as staff and utilities are not held centrally. The more direct costs related to this court-martial, such as legal fees and travel and subsistence are not yet fully available as some legal bills are yet to be presented. These are not expected to exceed £5 million.
