The Department has received a bid from the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive for approval of Government funding for two proposed extensions to Sheffield Supertram. We are currently considering their proposals. In July 2005, Nexus Passenger Transport Executive submitted their 20-year strategy for capital reinvestment in the Tyne and Wear Metro. The Department is considering requests by Nexus for a contribution to development costs for the strategy. In regard to Manchester Metrolink, I refer the hon. In early 2006 the Department expects to receive an updated business case from the promoters for the scheme. In reaching decisions on these schemes we will also be taking into account advice from the English regions as part of the regional funding allocation prioritisation process.
