Cape Town Treaty

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assessment he has made of the economic effects of the Cape Town treaty.

Answer: We will produce a regulatory impact assessment prior to taking forward ratification of the convention and protocol. In 1998 an economic impact assessment was commissioned by the Aviation Working Group (set up as an ad hoc industry group to contribute to the development of the convention) and IATA on the potential economic benefits of the proposed convention and protocol. The study was prepared under the auspices of the INSEAD Business School and the New York University Salomon Center.
