Afghanistan

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence under which North Atlantic Council Resolution United Kingdom forces have been deployed to Afghanistan since 2003.
Answer

The international security assistance force (ISAF) operates under the authority of United Nations' Security Council resolutions (UNSCRs). The North Atlantic Council does not pass resolutions but its decisions have defined the support given by NATO to the ISAF. The first of these was taken on 17 October 2002. On 16 April 2003 the council agreed NATO should take command of the ISAF later that year, and on 1 December 2003, confirmed NATO should proceed with the progressive expansion of the ISAF.
