Armed Forces: Coroners

- To ask the Secretary of State for Defence for what reasons the Government have legal representation at all inquests involving deceased military personnel.

For the majority of inquests, MOD does not have legal representation because they are non-adversarial, fact-finding proceedings. However, on some occasions the MOD, as an ““interested person”” may engage Counsel to assist the coroner in establishing the relevant facts surrounding the death, particularly in cases which are complex, often involving sensitive matters relating to national security.
