Fishing: Stock

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to meet the European Union Green Paper's target for maximum sustainable yield on fishing stock maintenance by 2015.
Answer

For the first time this year the European Union's scientific advisers, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, provided advice on achieving maximum sustainable yield for EU fish stocks by 2015, in line with the World Summit on Sustainable Development objective. The Government are committed to meeting this objective and are working with the European Commission and other member states to best implement reductions in fishing mortality in a gradual fashion, based on the best available science, in order to restore depleted fish stocks, while maintaining the viability of the EU's fishing industry.
