Aviation: Air Quality

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether their research indicates that exposure of a developing foetus or baby to the tricresyl phosphate isomer known as tri-ortho-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) is harmless; and what exposure standards they recommend be applied to pregnant bystanders.

Answer: I refer the noble Countess to the Written Statement made on 10 May 2011 (Official Report, col. WS 37). The information available has been published in the Cranfield University report. The next step is for the research studies, which the Department for Transport has commissioned, to be referred to the Committee on Toxicity. This will be done once the final study—swab test research—has been completed by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh.
