Congo: Politics and Government

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations the UK has made to the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the conduct of recent elections in that country.
Answer

In the run up to and throughout the election process, we have engaged closely with the Democratic Republic of Congo authorities on the conduct of the elections.In my 9 December 2011 statement, I said that I remained concerned by the reports of irregularities both in the run up to and throughout the process.The British ambassador in Kinshasa has lobbied Prime Minister Muzito, advisers to President Kabila, the Secretary General of the majority People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy party, and Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante President Mulunda, to stress the need for a credible investigation into the presidential results process, urgent measures to improve the legislative elections results process (which is now under way, with results due on 13 January) and for lessons to be learned before the provincial elections, due in 2012. We have also stressed that the Supreme Court needs to be visibly neutral through the elections process.
