Answer

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to monitor air quality around the Castle Cement plant in Clitheroe. [4715] Mr. Clappison: The Department of Environment has established a fixed monitoring station in the village of Chatburn in the vicinity of the Ribblesdale plant. The station is carrying out monitoring: for PM10 (fine particles) using both the tapered element oscillating microbalance ("TEOM") automatic method and non-continuous sampling; for NOx using the continuous ozone chemiluminescence system; for NO2 non-continuously using diffusion tubes; for SO2 using the continuous UV flourescence method. All pollutant measurements will be quality assured to national standards.
