Question: What steps are being taken by his Department to promote the decontamination of contaminated land and its development in preference to greenfield sites.

Answer: Mr. Nicholas Winterton: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken by his Department to promote the decontamination of contaminated land and its development in preference to green field sites; and if he will make a statement. [20319] Mr. Clappison: My Department's contaminated land policies, funding of research, technical guidance on topics such as techniques for site investigation, risk assessment of sites, take-up of new technologies and potential environmental liabilities and support under the single regeneration budget and through English Partnerships are all designed to enable the use of brownfield sites in preference to greenfield sites.
