Answer

Mr. Richards: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the net transfer of European funds to Wales in each of the last five years. [17874] Mr. Oppenheim: [holding answer 27 February 1997]: Because the data used to determine the United Kingdom's own resources contributions are collated for the UK as a whole, it would be possible to estimate only disaggregated net transfers of European funds to Wales at disproportionate cost. Furthermore, receipts from the Community which benefit Wales, but which do not pass through the Welsh Office, are not collected by the Government on a territorial basis, so that the total of Community receipts benefiting Wales is also not readily available. Welsh Office receipts, as published in the last departmental report of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's smaller Departments (Cm. 3217), from the Community for the five-year period 1991-92 to 1995-96, are set out in the following table. £ million _________________________________________________________________________________________________. 1991-92 1992-93 1993-94 1994-95 1995-96 EAGGF (guidance) 11 9 9 7 9 ERDF 57 44 50 53 53 ESF 0 0 13 10 12 Other receipts {1}-- {1}-- {1}-- {1}-- {1}-- Total for Welsh Office 68 53 72 70 74 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. {1} Signifies existence of receipts of less than £0.5 million.
