Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many research contracts and agreements in universities are currently being funded by the Atomic Weapons Establishment; what is the total value of these research projects; how many of these research projects are classified; and if he will list the universities at which these research projects are being funded.

Answer: Mr. Livingstone: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many research contracts and agreements in universities are currently being funded by the Atomic Weapons Establishment; what is the total value of these research projects; how many of these research projects are classified; and if he will list the universities at which these research projects are being funded. [49990] Mr. Spellar: The Atomic Weapons Establishment currently has twenty six research contracts and agreements with universities. The total value of these contracts, none of which is classified, is £2.2 million. I will write to my hon. Friend as to the actual universities involved and a copy of my letter will be placed in the Library of the House.
