Mr. Nicholas Winterton: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of proposals for the introduction of a progressive beer duty; and if he will make a statement. [35515] Dawn Primarolo: I received proposals for a sliding scale of beer duty from The Society of Independent Brewers on 9 March 1998. I have asked Customs and Excise to examine them and to provide me with advice in good time for the next Budget.
