To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, how many (a) statisticians and (b) economists have been employed in his Department in (a) 1997-98, (b) 1998-99, (c) 1999-2000 and (d) 2000-01. - Includes figures and tables. (Holding answer 8 November 2000).

Mrs. May: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many (a) statisticians and (b) economists have been employed in his Department in (a) 1997-98, (b) 1998-99, (c) 1999-2000 and (d) 2000-01. [137305] Mr. Wills: [holding answer 8 November 2000]: The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) employed 33 economists in each of the years 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-01. The number of statisticians employed by DfEE in each of the four years in question was: _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Number 1997-98 39 1998-99 41 1999-2000 44 2000-01 52 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. The increase between 1999-2000 and 2000-01 includes regarding of staff as statisticians.
