Question: To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, how many Government departments hold (a) a Charter Mark and (b) a Plain English Web award. - Inc fact that no Government Departments are Charter Mark holders themselves. Plain English awards are a matter for individual Departments and are not coordinated centrally.

Answer: Tim Loughton:: To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office how many Government Departments hold (a) a Charter Mark and (b) a Plain English web award. [83300] Mr. Alexander: No Government Departments are Charter Mark holders themselves. Currently 2,485 organisations within the public sector are Charter Mark holders, covering a wide range of sectors such as health, education, the courts, the employment service, Inland Revenue, local government and Police Forces. For example, all but a handful of local authorities have been awarded Charter Marks for a total of 874 individual services. Plain English awards are a matter for individual Departments and are not coordinated centrally. There is no central record of these awards maintained within the Cabinet Office.
