Proceeding contribution from Lord Maclennan of Rogart (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 19 July 2005. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 (Consequential Provisions and Modifications) Order 2005.

Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 (Consequential Provisions and Modifications) Order 2005

On these Benches we are not disposed to challenge either the necessity or the utility of the measures proposed. They appear entirely sensible. In so far as there is a policy underlying this somewhat technical and complex legislation, it appears to spring from the very sensible purpose of seeking to ensure a consistency of treatment of premises by the fire authorities. As such, it is entirely welcome. I hope that the clarity of the provision will, in the minds of the public and the authorities, be in no way obfuscated by the complexity of the legislative provision.
