Proceeding contribution from Lord Dholakia (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 20 October 2005. It occurred during Parliamentary proceeding on Prisons: Suicides.

Prisons: Suicides

My Lords, I take this opportunity to thank all noble Lords who have contributed to the debate. They have vast experience, which is reflected in their contributions. I also thank the Minister for her response. It is perfectly obvious from the debate that many of us have differing views on this complex matter, but I start from the point that even a single death is unacceptable—it is one too many. Let us hope that today’s debate gives us the renewed urgency mentioned by the right reverend Prelate the Bishop of Worcester, so that we can tackle this complex issue with policies that will at least help us in terms of alleviating and, to an extent, eliminating deaths when people are in the state’s custody. In the mean time, I beg leave to withdraw the Motion for Papers. Motion for Papers, by leave, withdrawn.
