Proceeding contribution from Lord Horam (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 8 November 2005. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee of the Whole House (HC) on Electoral Administration Bill 2005-06.
Electoral Administration Bill
Unfortunately, that shows that there is a downside to every improvement we try to make. On the whole, the inclusion of nationality on the form is reckoned to be a good thing and I support it. If there is a downside, it underlines the point I was making: it is not enough simply to register one’s nationality; we must give EROs the right, and the duty if possible, to check it out. We need a checking process as well as a registering process. That is the way to deal with what is undoubtedly a problem. I do not know how big the problem is. Perhaps the Minister knows.
