Proceeding contribution from Lord Laird (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 2 March 2006. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on Budget (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.

Budget (Northern Ireland) Order 2006

I welcome the remarks of the noble Lord, Lord Shutt of Greetland about a potential inquiry for Waterways Ireland. It does not matter what the mechanism is, we need something that is seen to be fair. Every time any of us try to spot anything up about Waterways Ireland to the bodies, the Dublin Government clam up and thump all over us. There is a lot of media interest in the activities of Waterways Ireland. I think there are at least two television programmes being created about the scandals there. It is of ongoing interest to journalists, and it will not go away. That is the point. It has been dumped on our doorstep by the Irish Government. I welcome the remarks of the noble Lords, Lord Kilclooney and Lord Shutt of Greetland. We need an independent inquiry.
