Proceeding contribution from Lord Rooker (Labour) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 2 March 2006. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on Budget (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.

Budget (Northern Ireland) Order 2006

I honestly do not know. It would be better if I delivered a few paragraphs in a letter rather than doing it off the top of my head—or on my feet from my notes. I have not answered any of the questions of the noble Lord, Lord Laird, and I have almost come to the end of my self-imposed 20 minutes. I will write to him on most of his points. He raised the London Olympics, as did others. I do not know what the noble Lord, Lord Coe, has done. As far as I know—because I am not involved in this—he has not committed us to a stadium, sports events or whatever. Northern Ireland can contribute a lot more, because there are all the training and other facilities that lots of teams will require for the Olympics. The stadium is another matter, but we have made it clear that if there is going to be a stadium, it is only going to be at the Maze. That has been made abundantly clear to everybody concerned, through letters and PQs. Going over the history of what might have happened in 1980, I do not know about that. I saw the Answer when I saw the PQ, and I will check on the answer about 1980 the noble Lord, Lord Laird, received in his letters. But it is now 2006. The fact is that, if there is going to be a stadium, it is only going to be in the context of the Maze. I say ““if””, because there is a business case to be explored, and money to be spent on that. We have not got anywhere near that process. We want Northern Ireland to get a good, full share of the Olympics, and we will do everything we can to see that that happens. As I say, however, there has got to be a proper business case. I am mindful of what the noble Lord, Lord Glentoran, said about building stadiums that have not got a home team.
