Proceeding contribution from Kelvin Hopkins (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 27 April 2006. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Honours System (Reform).
Honours System (Reform)
: I am puzzled by the idea of the British empire being a force for good in the world. About a third of my constituents come from countries that fought hard for their independence and did not see the British empire as being benign in any sense. In fact, such people were often oppressed by it. Let us consider areas such as Iraq. The mischief that the British empire caused there is still affecting us today.
