Proceeding contribution from Shahid Malik (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 7 June 2007. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Counter-Terrorism.

Counter-Terrorism

My right hon. Friend will be aware that there is a disproportionate fear of anti-terror legislation among many British Muslims. The former leader of the Conservative party talked about my right hon. Friend the Chancellor’s speech and question and answer session on Sunday in which he said that legislation ultimately will not defeat terrorism and extremism and that we need to"““win the battle of hearts and minds””." That is why I welcome the approach of consultation and consensus. However, does my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary accept that we need to do much more to reassure British Muslims that the approach of the security services and police will be intelligence led, not beard led?
