Proceeding contribution from Angela Eagle (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 17 December 2007. It occurred during Debate on bill on National Insurance Contributions Bill.
National Insurance Contributions Bill
I want to begin by wishing all Members who have given the Chamber priority on this, the period approaching the Christmas period, a happy Christmas; I hope that they have a nice break. The compliments of the season to everyone. We have had an extraordinary debate today. We see that the Conservatives are going to vote against a Bill that helps to put into effect a tax cut that will benefit or not disadvantage 21 million people; that will take 600,000 pensioners out of tax completely, a point that was not even mentioned this evening; that will take 200,000 children out of poverty—child poverty did not feature much, either; in fact, I am not sure that it was even mentioned by Conservatives—and that will help to make work pay.
