Proceeding contribution from Lord Hutton of Furness (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 6 February 2008. It occurred during Debate on treaty on Treaty of Lisbon (No. 4).

Treaty of Lisbon (No. 4)

I beg to move,"That this House approves the Government's policy towards the Treaty of Lisbon in respect of provisions concerning the single market." I believe that the founding purpose of the European Union was to try to secure a lasting peace throughout our continent by establishing, first, a common market in the key industrial sectors that could drive economic growth, create jobs and raise living standards, and that could also bring European nations closer together and, in the process, replace decades of strife and war with a new era of prosperity and progress. I am glad to say that that has remained the driving force of the European Union.
