Proceeding contribution from Hugh Bayley (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 25 February 2008. It occurred during Debate on treaty on Treaty of Lisbon (No. 6).

Treaty of Lisbon (No. 6)

I agree with the hon. Gentleman that EU enlargement has been an important driver for development, but he will agree that there must be somegeographic limits on enlargement. The EU has association agreements with countries that it would not accept into membership, including countries in north Africa and the middle east. Surely it is right that the European Union, which has been very good for development in central and eastern Europe, should apply that same expertise and those same strictures further afield, particularly in the poorest countries.
